Car companies Honda and Nissan have taken an important step towards a possible merger by signing a memorandum of understanding. Mitsubishi may also join the future holding, which must make a decision on participation by the end of January, reports auto.ru. The companies cite the need to adapt to unprecedented changes in the automotive industry as the main reason for creating the alliance. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe emphasized the historical significance of the moment, noting that such transformations happen once every century. Information about a possible merger between Nissan and Honda first appeared from insiders in December. According to them, the merger will help Japanese manufacturers optimize costs and strengthen their position in competition with Chinese automakers. Specific details of the future structure of the holding have not yet been disclosed.
