The number of shipyards in the world has increased against the background of an increase in order volumes
30.06.2024
Over the past two years, amid an increase in orders for new ships and their high cost, the number of operating shipyards in the world has increased by almost 18%, Splash reports, citing data from ship broker Xclusiv Shipbrokers.
In June 2022, there were 153 shipbuilding enterprises operating in the world, and 180 in June this year, with most of the increase coming from China.
However, the shortage of shipbuilding capacity is getting worse. So, the shipyards are contracted for container ships until 2029, and for LNG-gas carriers – until 2030.
At the beginning of June this year, the ratio of the order portfolio to the existing fleet in the bulk carrier segment was 9.3%, tankers – 10%, container ships – 20.3%, and gas carriers – 47.7%. These figures show a significant increase relative to the figures for 2023. Over the past two years, this ratio has increased by 43% for bulk carriers, by 72% for tankers and by 48% for gas carriers.
The volume of orders for container ships, which fell sharply in the second half of last year due to falling freight rates, has increased sharply this year, against the background of the situation in the Red Sea region. Thus, according to Alphaliner, 64 container ships with a total capacity of 543.5 thousand TEU have been ordered since the beginning of the year.
