The section of the Iranian railway from the city of Rasht to the Caspian port, which is part of the North–South transport corridor, will be put into operation on June 20, Tasnim news agency reported. In the future, it is planned to build the next section of tracks from the Caspian port to Astara in northwestern Iran.
– The Rasht – Caspian railway will allow the delivery of goods from the Caspian Sea to the south of the country to the Persian Gulf and the State of Oman, – said Abbas Khatibi, Deputy head of the Company for the construction and development of transport infrastructure.
It is expected that the entire branch line will be built in 2027-2028. The Russian authorities expect that the project can become an alternative to the Suez Canal, allowing for a through route for the sale of supplies both in transit to Europe and from Russia to the Persian Gulf.
