President of Turkmenistan to Participate in "Central Asia – Italy" Summit in Astana on May 30

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov will take part in the first summit of heads of state in the "Central Asia – Italy" format, which will be held on May 30 in Astana. This was announced by Turkmenistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov during a Cabinet meeting, according to TDH. As the foreign minister noted, developing mutually beneficial cooperation with European countries is one of the key priorities of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy. Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Italy were established in 1992. “Our countries interact constructively in the political and diplomatic sphere, including within respected international organizations,” Meredov emphasized. He added that Italy has co-sponsored eight UN General Assembly resolutions initiated by Turkmenistan. The minister highlighted the productive nature of the trade and economic partnership, as well as established cooperation with several major Italian companies. Turkmenistan and Italy also engage in fruitful cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian fields, as well as in archaeology. The legal framework of bilateral relations comprises 37 agreements. High-level visits and meetings play a key role in the development of interstate dialogue. Official visits of the President of Turkmenistan to Italy took place in 2009 and 2019, with a working visit in 2015. In 2014, the Prime Minister of Italy visited Turkmenistan on a working trip. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that the "Central Asia – Italy" format opens a new direction for effective cooperation and for expanding its scope. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming summit in strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships between the countries of Central Asia and Italy.
